2010 PUMPKIN RUN
The weather service was predicting clear blue skies and highs in the 70’s, but the 3rd Annual Bear Creek Pumpkin Run went on as scheduled! It truly was a perfect day for trail running. Even with a last minute course change and a few wrong turns I think everyone had a great time.
All the fun that was had would not have been possible without the help of our volunteers:
Trail Clearing and Course Design: Mike Weber, William McDuffie, Lynne McDuffie, River McDuffie
Awards: Lynne McDuffie, River McDuffie
Timing and Registration: Cynthia Reeves, Sarah Holden, Rhonda Key, Lynne McDuffie
Water Stations: Ann Brady, Barbara Smith, Mark Garner, Sue McDuffie, Linda Davis
Buzzard Rock Checkpoint: Mark Holden
Traffic and Course Control: Tristan Matthews, Rose Rodriguez, Cathy Hussey, Donna Christianson, Brian Christianson, Neil Johnson, Blanche Reeder
Special Thanks To: Bill and Sue McDuffie of McDuffie Appliance and Plumbing Parts for opening their business to the runners and walkers of the Pumpkin Run.
Thanks to everyone who came out and made this such an enjoyable day. We look forward to seeing you at all future events.

2010 BEARATHLON
The Bearathlon is the type of event that doesn’t sound like much when you look at the description. The total distance doesn’t even add up to 3 miles, but there wasn’t anyone coming up the hill at the finish wishing it was longer. Every competitor should be very proud of the job they did.
This event would not be possible without our volunteers and sponsors.
The start of the adult race was preceded by the presentation of our National Anthem, beautifully performed by Eden Holt. A special thank-you goes to her for helping to make Saturday’s race even more memorable.
Other thank-you’s go to our sponsors: Carolina Fried Chicken, Robbins Professional Center, McDuffie Plumbing and Appliance Parts, One Moore Stitch, Deep River Coffee, Town of Robbins, Middleton Mercantile, and, NC Canoe Racing Association
And to everyone who helped make this race happen:
William McDuffie – our tireless race director
Lynne McDuffie – T-shirt design, registration and finisher medals (hand-made over 100, and yes bears do have 5 claws!)
River McDuffie – trail clearing and course testing
Scott Key – water safety, boat wrangling
Ann Brady and Barbara Smith – donuts and the now famous “Bear Creek Shortcake”
Daltina Peele – timing and registration
Cynthia Reeves – parking and timing
Mark Garner – parking and boat wrangling
Terri Ritter – kayaks (saw our number on his caller ID Friday night and figured we need more kayaks—we did, and he delivered.)
Mike Weber- registration
Theron Bell – photography
Glenn Gilchrist- photography http://s921.photobucket.com/home/bearcreekkayak/allalbums
Gail Prevatte and the 4-H’ers for keeping everyone hydrated with their much-appreciated water stand
Robbins Rescue Squad – always ready
Everyone who helped take down the course, carry boats, etc., etc.
As always, Dalton Cheek, who provides the perfect venue and is constantly working to make improvements. (Who can remember all the privet along the creek bank?)
Planned changes for next year’s race:
We want to thank everyone for their patience at registration and at the awards. These are areas we plan to make improvements for next year. We mentioned the possibility of camping at the race site on Friday night. That would allow competitors to register and check-in and avoid the rush on Saturday morning. For added incentive everyone coming by on Friday will also find out about the “special test” prior to the trail portion.
As for the awards, our goal for next year is to do the awards at the creek within 30 minutes of the final finisher.

2009 Bear Creek Pumpkin Run
Even with the threat (and obviously not an idle one) of rain and wind, the 2nd Annual Bear Creek Pumpkin Run got underway on October 24th in Robbins, NC. The promise of freshly cut trail, not to mention the addition of a 10k “adventure course” was too much to pass up. There were 42 eager competitors ranging in age from 6 to 62, with 22 males and 20 females. We had a couple of wrong turns, several acts of good sportsmanship, and at least one runner who insisted on running the 10k course on a broken foot. A pretty typical day in Robbins.
All the fun that was had would not have been possible without the help of our volunteers:
Course Design: William McDuffie
Trail Clearing: Mike Weber, George Hayfield, Randall Moore, Joey Boswell, William McDuffie, Lynne McDuffie, River McDuffie
Awards: Lynne McDuffie, River McDuffie
Timing and Registration: Cynthia Reeves, Sara Lansdowne, Daltina McDuffie
Water Stations: Cathy Hussey, Mark Garner, Linda Koonce, Blanch Reeder, Sue McDuffie, Linda Davis
Traffic Control: Michael Koonce, Neil Johnson
Special Thanks To: Bill and Sue McDuffie of McDuffie Appliance and Plumbing Parts and Tiffany Evans and Randall Moore of Deep River Coffee for opening their businesses to the runners and walkers of the Pumpkin Run.
Thanks to everyone who came out and made this such an enjoyable day. We look forward to seeing you at all future events.
