2010 Lumber River Canoe and Kayak Challenge
2010 Lumber River Challenge Results
We are making plans for next year! Lynne said this was our 9th “last” Lumber, but I want everyone to go ahead and be preparing for 2011. After last Saturday’s race I’m sure that will include more running and less paddling.
The level this year was almost exactly the same as our previous all-time low in 2007. Some of the regulars may remember that year was followed by our all-time high water of over 8 feet in 2008. That gives us all something to look forward to.
This was the first year that the 10 mile course had more participants than the longer course. There were 19 competitors in the 20 mile event and 25 in the 10 mile. There were a total of 32 different boats. We also had a large number of first-timers. I hope all of you will come back, especially if we get that high water year.
Thanks to everyone for making this race possible. I won’t name individuals because I’ll certainly leave someone out, because everyone does something. Whether it’s driving shuttle, timing, helping other competitors on the course, even finding us a place to eat when the House of Pizza closed, all of you make this race better.

1st Annual Dam to Town Canoe and Kayak Race
Saturday, March 20, 2010
Thanks to all the competitors and volunteers that made the first Dam to Town Canoe and Kayak Race a great success. Sunny and 75 degrees did not hurt either.
Competitors gathered at the Hwy 705 Bridge Canoe Access in Robbins on Saturday March the 20th to register, then run shuttle to the start of the race at the Bear Creek Trail Water Plant access.
A big thanks to William McDuffie for organizing this event.
Town Manager George Hayfield had the shuttle road in top shape for the race. Cynthia Reeves, Sara Lansdown, Ken Wilkinson and Lynne McDuffie started the competitors who raced through class I rapids to the finish line. Daltina Peele and Tom Blue recorded the finish times. Mark Garner and Darrel Cockman made sure everyone ran “Gunworks Rapid” safely. Thirty two competitors lined up with their race faces on and were sent off at one minute intervals to receive their bragging rights and hand-made medallions. The majority of participants were from Moore County, but we also had several from the Raleigh area, and as far away as Virginia.
Glenn Gilchrist, Mayor Theron Bell, and Preacher Mike Weber took pictures that say way more than a thousand words. Special thanks go to Dalton Cheek for providing our canoe access at Hwy 705 and our shuttle drivers Bill and Sue McDuffie, along with Dalton and Linda Davis.
Thanks to Lynne McDuffie for making all the medals and River McDuffie who made countless trips with William to “check the creek.”
I hope everyone will make plans to be on Bear Creek next March for the 2nd Annual Dam to Town Canoe and Kayak Race. You’ve got a year to train. The time to beat is Ryan Avery’s 13 minutes and 25 seconds!
